Australia Day Brisbane

Australia Day events abound in Brisbane

You won’t need to don an Akubra nor listen to John Williamson’s greatest hits to fully embrace the festivities of Australia Day on Sunday January 26.

With the bonus public holiday on Monday January 27, Aussie guys and gals can dive headfirst into a number of patriotic parties happening around Brisbane on Australia Day.

If triple j’s Hottest 100 tracks form the soundtrack to your annual celebrations, you may like to pair the countdown with The Local Taphouse Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers of 2013 – in moderation, of course. Once again, the nationwide beverage poll will determine the leading craft beer makers from around the country. You can head to Tippler’s Tap on Australia Day to listen to the musical countdown and keep abreast of the year’s best beers, or drop by Green Beacon Brewing to partake in its first birthday celebrations.

Nearby at Chester Street Bakery & Bar, Chester Street’s Australia Day Feast will feed the masses from 12:00 pm – with gourmet barbecue sausages, meat pies, lamingtons and other delicious homegrown treats available. A short stroll away, the Gasworks precinct’s Gasometer frame will house the sounds of the triple j Hottest 100 countdown between 11:00 am and 7:00 pm. The precinct will also host some fair dinkum events – including thong-throwing, prawn-peeling and mango-eating competitions.

All-Australian fare featuring locally sourced produce, Australian music, sunshine and quenching beverages will be presented at Alfred & Constance’s Australia Day House Party, which will also be blasting the countdown in its two houses.

Head deeper into Fortitude Valley to partake in Ric’s Big Backyard Australia Day Party at Rics Bar, an event that will involve live music, a giant mechanical surfboard, DJs, prizes and the triple j Hottest 100 countdown from 12:00 pm. Laruche’s Australia Day Block Party will feature the talents of DJ Danny Daze and German expat Henrik Schwarz from 2:00 pm – tickets are available from Pulse.

Across the river, South Bank’s Cultural Forecourt will be filled with the tantalising scents emerging from its Great Australian Bites event on Friday January 24. Cooking stations will be set up to showcase the best in Queensland barbecue experiences from 5:00–9:00 pm. Lynton Tapp will demonstrate his passion for cooking with Australian produce, while Brisbane band Sheppard will supply the party tunes alongside Brother Fox and Slip-On Stereo. You can secure your tickets to the event online. Sunday January 26 will also see the South Bank region come alive with markets, fireworks, a RAAF flyover and family-friendly entertainment.

Walk a little further and you’ll find The Fox Hotel’s Australia Day Bash taking over the multi-storied venue. Infamous party boy Warwick Capper will make an appearance, while live music and fashion will be on show throughout the party space. Pavlova jugs and Weis bar cocktails will be shared on the day, as will lamb pies (in an eating competition, no less) and Aussie beers. Next you can toddle on over to West End’s Sling from 12:00 pm, to enjoy an all-you-can-eat feast of cooked banana prawns, games, prizes, drinks and triple j’s countdown.
