Tinnies and two-up – where to commemorate ANZAC Day in Brisbane

Whether it’s listening to the stirring tones of a bugler playing ‘The Last Post’ at dawn or knocking back a quiet cold one, there are many ways to commemorate the legacy of ANZAC Day. Falling on Tuesday April 25 this year, the public holiday does not fall into a long weekend, but there are still a number of venues putting on special events for the occasion. From two-up and tinnies to big bands and bikkies, we’ve tracked down the best places to pay your respects this ANZAC Day.

The Fox: The Fox will be opening its doors from 10:00 am come ANZAC Day. Boasting Brisbane’s biggest two-up ring, punters can win serious cash and munch on a classic sausage sizzle feed to a soundtrack of live entertainment. To make things even better, 50 cents from every beer sold on the day will be donated to Brisbane Legacy House.

Story Bridge Hotel: Feeling the hunger pangs after dawn service? The Story Bridge Hotel has got your back. Opening the Main St Bar & Eatery for breakfast from 6:30 am, the hotel will be hosting traditional ANZAC celebrations as well as Lawrence and the Machine playing in the corner bar from 5:00 pm.

Bands in Parks – Brisbane Botanic Gardens: Get your toes tapping with some live music from the Brisbane Symphonic Band – the group is playing a free Anzac Swing concert in the gardens at 1:00 pm. You can also catch free tours of the National Australia Remembers Freedom Wall from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

The Victory Hotel: You can head to the Victory Hotel from 1:00 pm this ANZAC Day to commemorate our diggers and celebrate our Australian Defence Force personnel. Try your hand at some two-up, knock the froth off a cold one and listen to live sets from Kane Cahill, The Lazy Valentines and Caillin Malley.

Finn McCool’s: Although best known as an Irish pub, Finn McCools is all about Aussie values this ANZAC Day. Encouraging punters to pay their respects at a local dawn service first, doors open at 1:00 pm for a classic barbecue, rounds of two-up, cold beers and live entertainment.

The Stock Exchange Hotel: Following the ANZAC Day parade in the CBD, Stockies will be open from 1:00 pm to host live music on the rooftop plus its annual two-up competition. The hotel will also be raising money to support Legacy Brisbane, so dig deep!

The Shafston Hotel: Having become something of a tradition, the Shafston Hotel is hosting its third annual Tinnies & Two Up laneway festival. Punters can munch on food truck bites, grab a drink from one of three pop-up bars and listen to live tunes for a cause – all funds raised on the day go to the Mates 4 Mates charity!

The Regatta: This one’s for the early risers – the Regatta Hotel will be open from 5:30 am for post-dawn service breakfast, followed by an all-day barbecue and live entertainment. Just to add a bit of sweetness, there will also be a pavlova stand and Anzac biscuits available.

Official services: There are a number of official ANZAC Day events happening on Tuesday April 25 – keep an eye on the Brisbane City Council, ANZAC Day Parade and RSL Queensland websites for updates on locations of dawn services and parades.
