American Ballet Theatre performs in Australia for the first time
For the very first time in Australia, the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) will perform an exclusive 13-date season at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre from today, Thursday August 28 to Sunday September 7.
You may have hung up your ballet shoes and vacuum packed the tutu back in your school days, but few of us can resist the thrill and romance of live dance. That ripple of excitement is about to become a wave as QPAC continues its International Series with an exclusive 13-date season of America’s leading national ballet company, American Ballet Theatre. Performing for the very first time in Australia, the ABT dancers have flown direct from New York to Brisbane to bring the glitz and glamour of Swan Lake and Three Masterpieces to the Lyric Theatre.
Quintessential ballet Swan Lake, complemented by Tchaikovsky’s phenomenal score and an awe-inspiring stage set, will treat local crowds to nine performances from today, Thursday August 28 to Thursday September 4. Fortunately, those living in rural locations won’t have to miss out on the performance, with a live regional simulcast of the ballet to nine remote venues around the state this Friday, August 29. ABT dancers will also demonstrate their incredible versatility in Three Masterpieces, as they showcase three ballets from leading contemporary choreographers, Bach Partita by Twyla Tharp, Seven Sonatas by Alexei Ratmansky and Fancy Free by Jerome Robbins, from Friday September 5 to Sunday September 7.
Ballet devotees will be able to immerse themselves in the glamour with the Insight Events program offered throughout the ABT season. Watch a rehearsal, take a Backstage Tour, join the Conversation Series or listen to a Q&A for an inside peek into this magical world. The super keen can also get their own feet moving with a Latin or ballroom dancing class or watch one of history’s finest dance films in the outdoors for free.
