Music and the written word combine for A Rock and Roll Writers Festival
Music critics, authors, commentators and musicians will get together for a literary festival exploring the nature between writing and music.
Music and writing have a complicated relationship – sometimes beneficial and symbiotic, other times contentious and antagonistic. The greatest musicians often incorporate literary concepts into their songs, and many authors use music references to solidify place and time as well as emotional links. A Rock and Roll Writers Festival is a curated, weekend-long festival that will host a series of panel discussions featuring literary figures, musicians and artists at The Brightside on April 2 and 3.
Through interviews, presentations and discussions, guests will discuss topics such as how music is used as a call to action for protests and social change, what makes a song connect with listeners, the role of slang in song, novels with music and a central theme and what motivates music critics. Speakers at the festival include Walkley Award-winning journalist Paul Barclay, poet Samuel Wagan Watson, comedian and author Mandy Nolan, music critic Kate Hennessy, musician Jake Stone and author of Pig City Andrew Stafford.
