A Midsummer Night’s Dream given new life at QPAC

One of William Shakespeare’s most popular works is undergoing a reinvention at the hands of Queensland Ballet at the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a fantastical work of love, deceit and adventure. Hailed by many as one of The Bard’s best masterpiece works (of which he has many) A Midsummer Night’s Dream has seen numerous adaptations over the generations, each hoping to imbue a unique element into the play in order to bolster the magical current that underscores the story. One of the most recent productions to add a new dynamic is the ballet performance choreographed by Liam Scarlett, who was appointed The Royal Ballet’s first Artist in Residence in 2012.

Alongside Felix Mendelssohn’s musical score, Scarlett’s choreography has breathed new life into A Midsummer Night’s Dream, opening the doors for several ballet companies to take on the work in a new way. The Queensland Ballet will be performing A Midsummer Night’s Dream from April 1–16 at QPAC, with musical accompaniment by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra conducted by Nigel Gaynor. The production will be fleshed out thanks to sublime costume and set design by Tracy Grant Lord and lighting by Kendall Smith.

Enjoy a post-show tipple and dinner at Fish Lane – a pizza at Julius, a cocktail at Maker or a craft beer at Saccharomyces Beer Cafe would work a treat.
