‘A Happy Event’ shows the trials of young parenthood
The arrival of the first child, for most young parents, signals the greatest life-changing experience they have encountered to date. French director Rémi Bezançon captures the adventures, challenges and heartbreaks of first-time parenthood in his film, A Happy Event (Un heureux événement).
A French/Belgian production, the film follows philosophy student Barbara – who is amidst writing her thesis – and her boyfriend Nicolas, as they come to terms with the fact that they are bringing a new being into the world.
When Barbara struggles to connect with her new baby following the birth, she embarks on a journey wrought with emotion, ranging from guilt and apprehension, to overwhelming love and pure ecstasy. Her relationship with Nicolas suffers as a result, as he struggles to understand her constantly fluctuating state of emotions.
For those who have experienced parenthood, the films presents a wealth of familiar situations that evoke both laughter and cringes, documenting the moments that make the whole ordeal worthwhile. But for those who are yet to embark on the blessed journey, be warned – it may cause you to think twice …
