Editorial Guidelines
Created for a sophisticated, digital savvy, urban audience and built on the philosophy Sleep in. Slow down. Enjoy., The Weekend Edition delivers Brisbane and the Gold Coast’s local lifestyle news with a touch of global goodness. Published digitally every Thursday at 10:00 am and 11:00 am respectively, The Weekend Edition uncovers the best of Brisbane and the Gold Coast across food and drink, fashion, culture, public interest, events, people, travel and trends.
Following in the footsteps of its predecessor map magazine (1999–2014), The Weekend Edition is built around the editorial ethos of positive media. It does not focus on negative reviews or comments. It does not offer critiques or exposés, except to the extent that such information may be necessary for the general reader to understand the usefulness of a resource.
Coming from print roots, The Weekend Edition treats all of its content as though it were going to print and not able to be changed once published. The team adheres to thorough editing practices that follow our editorial style guide and takes care to not publish any second-hand information – all articles are based around official sources such as press releases or direct contact with the subject(s) of the article.
All content on The Weekend Edition is to be of the highest quality and of interest to its readers. The majority of content on the site is selected and written at the discretion of the editorial team. We work with a small amount of select advertisers and site partners to collaborate on engaging native content that is of relevance to our readers, the subject matter of which is at the managing editor’s discretion. We clearly label all native content with statements such as “This article was created in partnership with …” to ensure our readers are informed when they are reading sponsored or collaborative posts.
The Weekend Edition’s core editorial team works in house, collaborating on ideas. Occasionally, we will engage the services of a contributor or freelance writer to create content for the site that follows our editorial guidelines and style guide. All writers and contributors for The Weekend Edition are credited for their work so it can be attributed to them, however all work is approved by in-house editors before publication to ensure it meets The Weekend Edition’s editorial ethos, high editorial standards and editorial guidelines.
In addition to the above, The Weekend Edition conducts its journalism by following the guidelines of the Australian Press Council, as follows:
The Statement of General Principles
Publications are free to publish as they wish by reporting facts and expressing opinions, provided they take reasonable steps to comply with the following Principles and the Council’s other Standards of Practice:
Accuracy and clarity
1. Ensure that factual material in news reports and elsewhere is accurate and not misleading, and is distinguishable from other material such as opinion.
2. Provide a correction or other adequate remedial action if published material is significantly inaccurate or misleading.
Fairness and balance
3. Ensure that factual material is presented with reasonable fairness and balance, and that writers’ expressions of opinion are not based on significantly inaccurate factual material or omission of key facts.
4. Ensure that where material refers adversely to a person, a fair opportunity is given for subsequent publication of a reply if that is reasonably necessary to address a possible breach of General Principle 3.
Privacy and avoidance of harm
5. Avoid intruding on a person’s reasonable expectations of privacy, unless doing so is sufficiently in the public interest.
6. Avoid causing or contributing materially to substantial offence, distress or prejudice, or a substantial risk to health or safety, unless doing so is sufficiently in the public interest.
Integrity and transparency
7. Avoid publishing material which has been gathered by deceptive or unfair means, unless doing so is sufficiently in the public interest.
8. Ensure that conflicts of interests are avoided or adequately disclosed, and that they do not influence published material.
