TWE QAGOMA Winter Design Markets

Winter Design Markets returns to QAGOMA

A surfeit of locally made artisan wares will line the sunshine-cloaked GOMA entrance this weekend, when the Winter Design Markets returns to the gallery.

This Saturday July 19, more than 40 local artists and designers will present their latest handiwork as part of this bi-annual showcase of the thriving local craft and design community. A well-known cluster of Brisbane ceramicists will be amongst those at the Winter Design Markets, including paper boat press, Sharon Muir, Spun Mud, Erin Lightfoot, Clairy Laurence and Jennifer Orland. Amongst the diverse styles of jewellery on display will be Japanese-themed accessories by Mabina Alaka, embroidered creations from Edward & Lilly, silverware by O bliss, Liana Kabel’s playful knitting needle collection and contemporary pieces by Barbara Heath and Melbourne’s Pip Keane.

Newcomers to the market include Jesika Jack and her delicate constellation jewellery, pottery by Susan Simonini and vibrant fabric purses by Tanglewebb, while Touch Wood Design, Zillpa, Bravo Juliet Designs and Yardage Design round out the selection of homewares and textiles. Another distinct addition to this year’s winter market is the indigenous weaving and fibre arts from Gapuwiyak Aboriginal Arts Centre in Arnhem Land, with bowls, grass mats and other woven goods travelling from the Northern Territory to Brisbane for market goers to caress the textures and experience the craftsmanship in person.

The market will sprawl across the GOMA entrance and the Bodhi Tree Terrace from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm this Saturday, and coincides with the Harvest exhibition, showing at the gallery from until September 21. The Winter Design Markets is a cash only affair, so make sure to stock up on papery money before you arrive.
