You know when you see a piece of paint peeling, and you just can’t resist the urge to help it on its way? Slowly, piece by piece, you pick away until you realise in horror that you’ve made what was once a tiny blemish into a sizeable gash.

When it’s your own lamp that you’re slowly picking apart, however, then no one can complain about your destructive habits. Bucharest-based Dragos Motica Studio’s Slash Lamp challenges the notion of what constitutes a vulgarised object and urges people to decide between a state of non-intervention or one of intervention. The concrete pendant lamp, designed for Romanian furniture brand Ubikubi, can be kept completely intact as a solid lamp, or can be slowly destructed by picking away parts of the concrete from its interior shell.

The lamp’s materials – including concrete, reinforcing wire, climbing rope , and spool for high-voltage wires – were inspired by industrial facilities and construction sites.
