Simon Degroot unveils mural at Vintaged Bar + Grill

This year marks one decade of Brisbane painter Simon Degroot exhibiting his playful, contemporary paintings. His latest project, a hand-painted, large-scale mural at Vintaged Bar + Grill, offers a reinterpretation of a sketch by Australian architect Harry Seidler.

While Simon Degroot’s exhibitions typically act as a medium for self-reflection and studio-based development, the local painter also completes murals for clients within urban environments. His latest mural commission with Mild Manners for Hilton Brisbane is an adaptation of a photocopy of Le Lagon, an original artwork by Matisse. The design was originally appropriated from a photocopy of a photocopy from the office of renowned Hilton architect Harry Seidler, but now it’s the dominant motif being featured throughout the hotel’s central atrium and the interior of dining venue Vintaged Bar + Grill. The process of reappropriating, reusing and reconstructing is a prominent theme within Simon’s work, as the artist reinterprets original designs.

The 18-square-metre artwork can be viewed at Vintaged Bar + Grill during the venue’s opening hours. A free exhibition entitled After Image will also offer viewers insight into the creative process Simon undertook as he developed the large-scale piece. Twelve sketches of working samples from the original mural will be on display in the business centre on level six of Hilton Brisbane until Saturday August 30.
