Tuckbox is a testament to clean design offering more than meets the eye
Have you ever heard of a tuckbox? If not, allow us to fill you in – it was the name given to a timber safe box that kids used to take along to boarding school, using it to store their most prized possessions. In a society built on the fast and disposable, the notion of keepsakes and treasures is becoming increasingly lost – but there are people out there fighting to keep the dream alive. If products with thought and permanence inspire you, it’s time you got acquainted with Tuckbox.
The Tuckbox story started when brothers Daniel and Anthony de Groot were growing up in Brisbane’s own Arana Hills. The pair had a shared interest in understanding how things worked, leading them down different career paths – industrial design and engineering respectively – but it eventually drew them together again when they decided to start a business. After relocating to Melbourne, the guys channelled their mutual love of engineering, design, making and experimenting into creating pieces from scratch. Daniel’s wife Prue came on board to take care of media and comms, and Tuckbox was born. The brand’s distinct aesthetics, high functionality and handmade ethos has cemented its status as one to watch.
Tuckbox has made its debut into outdoor furniture with The Paper Set, a striking collection inspired by the strength of the folded form – think origami vibes, strong lines and reinforced structure without the bulk. The engineering of each product is a testament to the team’s focus on marrying function and beauty, ensuring practicality and support from every piece. The colour palette has expanded from the brand’s staples of black, white and brass to include navy blue, mustard yellow and brick red. The brand’s manufacturing process ensures each piece is made either in-house or locally from responsibly sourced raw materials.
The future of Tuckbox is looking exceptionally bright, with the brand exhibiting in Melbourne in July as well as a host of exciting projects in the works. You can shop Tuckbox on the brand’s official website, keep up to date on Facebook and stalk the stunning wares on Instagram.
