Sink into a Mayor sofa designed by &tradition

Carrying on the tradition of fine craftsmanship while introducing design heritage to a new generation, contemporary design company &tradition is the Danish studio behind the renowned Mayor sofa. Originally designed in 1939 by Danish architects Arne Jacobsen and Flemming Lassen for the Sollerod Town Hall in Copenhagen, the iconic Mayor sofa has become one of their most well-known works. Brought back to life by &tradition, the modernist three-seater combines a Scandinavian wood aesthetic with tight wool upholstery. The solid frame is made of white oiled oak or smoked oiled oak, with a variety of upholstery colours and materials available. Two rows of buttons extend over the armrests and back, with three loose cushions comprising the seating area. A list of Australian &tradition suppliers can be found on the company’s website. more

TWE Crown Vase
Design

Crown Vase redefines home floral arrangements

Humble French-Canadian industrial designer Lambert Rainville is redefining the art of flower arranging with his Crown Vase. While normally a vase conceals the mess of stems sitting below the perky petals, the Crown Vase treats the flowers themselves as part of the vase design, not merely as replaceable content. The design holds rigid-stem flowers in a free-standing and decorative structure, making it perfect for Australian natives like proteas and banksias – just make sure the weight is evenly distributed. Each stem sits on a diagonal, balancing out those slanting in the other direction on the other side. Find the vase here. more

Henry Wilson keeps your keys and change tidy

The French term ‘vide-poche’ translates to ‘empty pockets’, which is what designer Henry Wilson’s sturdy trays are asking you to do. When set on the dresser of your room or the side table as you enter the house, the Vide Poche lets you lighten your load, emptying your pockets of the day’s cargo – from keys and coins to business cards, perhaps even storing your phone and watch. Made from aluminium or bronze, the tray is reversible and double sided, allowing you to flip the vessel between a single open scoop for those like a bit of chaos, or two compartments for shipshape structure. Based in Sydney, Henry executes his furniture, lighting and product crafting at his studio and workshop in Rozelle, which is fashioned from stacked shipping containers, and lodged between timber suppliers and boat builders. more

Pencil by FiftyThree
Design

Digital sketching made simple with Pencil by FiftyThree

The screen of an iPad can never quite live up the tactility of a piece of sketch paper, but the process of creating art on a tablet has become a whole lot easier with the release of Pencil by FiftyThree. Emulating the characteristics of a traditional pencil, this stylus-like tool can be used to draw and erase, and even allows you to blend its marks with your fingers. The designers behind the Pencil and its accompanying app have also taken into account hand positioning, incorporating a special ‘palm rejection’ action that allows you to rest your hand on the screen while drawing. The Pencil has been crafted in sustainably harvested walnut or black brushed aluminum, which conceals the Bluetooth wireless connection device and rechargeable battery within.
