Nocturna is the brainchild of Brisbane-based visual artist Sam Penberthy, a multidisciplinary creative whose work is largely inspired by dark landscapes and the subconscious. Back in 2015, Sam decided to channel these forces into a more tangible product, and thus Nocturna was born – an ideal celebration of her inspirations. The candles are all consciously created in cruelty-free style, free of beeswax and harmful parabens and employing a clean-burning cotton wick. Each piece is a work of art in its own right – from the intricately decorated lids to the signature rose wax motif carved into every candle, they are almost too pretty to burn.

When it comes to the Nocturna range, there are five distinct styles and scents to choose from – Orientals like The Woods, Salem and Wabi Sabi are complemented by gourmand-inspired creations such as Nyctophilliac and Tangier. Each scent is delicate and subtle, drawing upon more food-based ingredients like vanilla, balsam and cinnamon for the gourmand options while fresh moss, musk, clove and amber contribute to the oriental palette. As an extra little feature, the walls of the candles’ glass casing give each flame a vivid violet appearance – perfect for some moody ambience.
