The Christmas round-up: gifts for design lovers

The first week of December – a time to shake the dust off the old Christmas tree, polish those decorations and embrace the soothing sounds of Mariah Carey’s Christmas album. But it is also the week when gift-buying anxiety kicks in, and you realise you only have three weeks until the big day arrives. To help make the silly season a little less silly, we’ve rounded up some ideas to please the design and homewares lovers in your life.

For the entertainer …
We all have this friend – the one who hosts the best dinner parties, and always seems to have the most enviable of entertaining apparatus. To ensure their welcome drinks are served up in style, wrap up this Kate Spade melamine tray from Domayne Fortitude Valley. If you’re more interested in what those drinks are poured from, opt for this super kitsch pineapple carafe from Gorman, or this gold-dipped beauty from Country Road – you could even pair it with these Angus & Celeste gold luster ceramic bowls from Green Tangerine.

If your entertainer prefers a casual afternoon tea, gift these Moroccan tea glasses from Hamimi, or a handmade teapot from Oxfam Shop. You can make sure their tea party is decorated with style too, with this wooden bunting from Cubbylove. And for the entertainer who really has everything? Get them a pair of flamingo friends from Absolutely Fabulous to greet their guests at their next party.

For the homemaker …
This is the friend that takes pride in their home – they may have recently moved in to new digs, or just appreciate beautiful homewares. If you’re stuck for ideas, make sure their home is perfectly scented with an eco candle from local label Fred + Heidi, or pick up an ultra versatile Uashmama paper bag from AP Design House – they can use as a planter cover, for storage or even for serving up treats. For those whose taste you are more certain of, splash out on some bed linen from Karen Walker Home, or pick out a custom-made wall piece from Deep Blue Maps at Showroom.

If you’re looking for a design piece they may not have seen before, place a pair of Pop Concrete Pop Cubes under the tree, or choose from the plethora of quirky Japanese design products and books in the special Future Beauty pop-up shop at GOMA. When all else fails, they are sure to be pleased with an incredible book or magazine – try Folio Books, Scrumptious Reads, Avid Reader or one of the many stores in our Stumble Guide.

For the outdoors type …
The long summer days are perfect for heading outside and getting back to basics – but that doesn’t mean your outdoor lover needs to sacrifice great design. For those with a green thumb, wrap up a handmade copper gardening tool from Everingham & Watson, or this sandbox planter from Paterson + Steele. If your recipient is more of a beach bum deck them out in style, with a roundie towel from St Barts, a Basil Bangs umbrella from Greenhouse, Sunny Life Beach Sounds from Green Grass Home & Body and, the pièce de résistance, a giant inflatable doughnut.

Campers will rejoice when they unwrap a set of enamel mugs from The Spring Shop for their early morning cup of campfire joe, or you can check out our camping essentials list for more inspiration. Alternatively you can DIY your Christmas gift and craft a leather compass pouch, or a folding tripod campstool.
