Sheets on the Line opens Paddington shop

There’s nothing quite like slipping your tired body between freshly laundered, soft sheets come the end of a busy weekend. Hospital corners tucked just so, the top folded down over the doona, creating a multi-layered, colourful cloud of a bed. Local bed linen designers Steven and Debra Clifford-Ames harnessed the important role sheets play in delivering a good night’s sleep and channelled it into organic brand Sheets on the Line. more

Enter your cafe in the Eat Drink Design Awards

Each year we peel back the pages of artichoke magazine with anticipation, hoping to see a few Brisbane-based cafes and restaurants amongst the beautiful venues that take out the top spots in Architecture Media’s annual Eat Drink Design Awards. While we appreciate that there is a surfeit of beautiful new cafes, bars and restaurants dotting the country (and our neighbour New Zealand) to choose from, we would love to see more of our city’s excellent locales recognised at a national level. more

Sink into a Mayor sofa designed by &tradition

Carrying on the tradition of fine craftsmanship while introducing design heritage to a new generation, contemporary design company &tradition is the Danish studio behind the renowned Mayor sofa. Originally designed in 1939 by Danish architects Arne Jacobsen and Flemming Lassen for the Sollerod Town Hall in Copenhagen, the iconic Mayor sofa has become one of their most well-known works. Brought back to life by &tradition, the modernist three-seater combines a Scandinavian wood aesthetic with tight wool upholstery. The solid frame is made of white oiled oak or smoked oiled oak, with a variety of upholstery colours and materials available. Two rows of buttons extend over the armrests and back, with three loose cushions comprising the seating area. A list of Australian &tradition suppliers can be found on the company’s website. more

Taste of Wood table melds design and food

With Milan’s design week 2014 Salone Internazionale del Mobile running April 9–14 this week, we take a look back at a highlight from last year’s edition. In a design process that runs full circle, Italian creative Antonio Aricò designed a range of outdoor furniture that is made with olive wood and finished with olive oil. Taste of Wood is intended as a cheeky design ‘eulogy’ to the olive tree and an illustration of the importance of olive oil to Italian culture. The range was exhibited at Foodmade during Milan Design Week in 2013, where designers were challenged to use food as a raw material. Visitors to the presentation were then encouraged to not only use olive oil to polish the set of table and chairs, but also to taste it. more

Get cosy in the Snug Chair by abalos

While not quite sculptural, the humble beanbag inspires feelings of comfort and cosiness, as its mouldable shape hugs tightly to your figure. Similarly, the unique hollow form of the Snug Chair spoons your seated body, meaning you can do away with the foam-filled floor couches. more
