The 2014 Houses Awards were held at Sydney’s Doltone House Hyde Park last week, with nine winners and 21 commendations awarded across the eight categories. The top honour of Australian House of the Year was awarded to the Invisible House by Peter Stutchbury Architecture, which sees a residential dwelling exhibiting beautiful connection to its panoramic landscape in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales. Brisbane-based studio Owen and Vokes and Peters was the sole Queensland firm amongst the winners, receiving two commendations. The Panorama Drive property in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland received a commendation in the House Alteration and Addition under 200 sqm, which saw strategic interventions to an existing timber house. The studio’s West End Tower also received a commendation for House Alteration and Addition over 200 sqm. A full list of the awards results can be found… more
The Sunshine Coast studio of creative agency POMO has been named the Sustainable Building of the Year – Commercial Building at the Queensland Building Design Awards. Designed by creative director Stephen Burton and Simon Scott of SSB Design Studio, the tree house bush studio engaged locally sourced materials and labour to shape the sustainable workspace. more

One sunny Brisbane afternoon, an architect, a creative director and an electrical engineer who had gotten together for a few beers came about the discussion topic that it would be interesting to capture the construction process of a building – the drawings and plans being brought to three-dimensional life. A little market research for a reasonably costed product left the trio empty handed, and so, armed with a few more beers, ideas on how to build one began to roll in and they set about creating a prototype time-lapse camera. more

Presented by Houses magazine, the Houses Awards is an annual program celebrating the country’s best residential projects. Last year, Brisbane practice James Russell Architect’s Bisley Place house took out the top prize, while A-CH (Atelier Chen Hung) won the New House under 200 sqm category for its Keperra House. Delivering insight into the contemporary residential architecture scene, the awards showcase the result of innovation and design thinking applied to the humble home.
