Upgrade pitched for Bulimba Library

Libraries used to be spaces of solace – librarians shushing if someone whispered too loud, books browsed quietly in corners, initials and dates written on paper slips within the jacket to record the borrower. These days, technology has altered the role of the humble library. These dens of knowledge now play host to workshops, computer stations, exhibitions and programs.

With these changing dynamics in mind, local Morningside Ward councillor Shayne Sutton is working with Kieron Gait Architects to come up with a new design for the 50-year-old Bulimba Library. Along with a need for an architecture update, the upgrade will ensure the library is kept relevant for new generations going forward, addressing internal and external design functionality, establishing a new covered community space where the current courtyard is located, and activating the existing under-utilised pocket of Council-owned land next to the library.

For this project to be considered by council, Shayne has begun collecting signatures for a petition that calls for a $2 million upgrade to transform the library into an engaging community space. So far, the petition has 500 signatures from locals interested in boosting this community hub. To have your say and sign the petition, head here.
