Open shop: Brunswick Street Mall Pods, Fortitude Valley

In October, Brisbane City Council announced it would fast track a $4 million upgrade of the Brunswick Street Mall in Fortitude Valley. Now local foodies and creatives have a chance to put their stamp on the redesign, pitching to make one of the Placemaking Pods their own.

Inspired by shipping container villages like The People’s Market and Eat Street Markets, mixed with the pop-up shop concept, the Brunswick Street Mall Placemaking Pods will line the centre of the redeveloped mall and are set to house an array of cafes, bars, fashion boutiques and art spaces.

Versatile in use, the pods can be easily reconfigured or subdivided, and be fixed and refitted with little cost, making the facilities suited to the short-term leases anticipated. The use of architecturally engaging design will enliven the somewhat tired precinct, with the five small-footprint retail spaces offering flexible rooftop and outdoor licensed areas. As part of the mall redevelopment, the current brick pavers will be replaced with patterned concrete that is easier to clean and reduces trip hazards. A large wire roof structure is another new addition, supporting lighting and public art and providing shelter and shade.

To register your interest in making a pod your own, contact Jones Lang LaSalle before February 11.
