Brisbane to gain own Flatiron Building in Fortitude Valley

Our local taste for all things American is about the expand from cuisine-based desires to architectural interests with a Brisbane version of New York’s renowned Flatiron Building planned for Fortitude Valley.

Completed in 1902, Manhattan’s Flatiron Building quickly became an icon of the city, taking its name from a resemblance to a cast-iron clothes iron. Numerous buildings in the US, Canada and Europe also take the Flatiron name, having been designed on island sites, with Brisbane set to join the conglomerate.

In a modern show of the building’s unique curvature, the proposed $600 million project will run the length of an entire block, brushing Brunswick Street, Alfred Street and Barry Parade. The proposed development has been dubbed FV and has been submitted by Melbourne developer Gurner. The site will consist of three towers above an integrated podium, two of which are planned for residential use, with the third to host a hotel. The mixed-use development has been designed by Melbourne architecture firm Elenberg Fraser and will see restaurants, shops and offices converge over three levels.

The Flatiron-esque tower has been designed so that the lustrous golden exterior catches the morning and afternoon sunlight, while gardens, a U-shaped pool and communal facilities will feature on the second level. The project nods to the eccentricity of the surrounding suburb, meeting that with its slender wedge-shaped building and drawing the city’s urban architecture into a future-focused, globally minded and unique position.
