Boggo Road Gaol set for a $300-million urban renewal

Decommissioned in 1989, the historic Boggo Road Gaol is undergoing a major renewal, proposed to bring a new urban village to Brisbane’s south side.

The site is the latest of Brisbane’s heritage-listed precincts to undergo rejuvenation, similar to The Barracks in Petrie Terrace. Led by Leighton Properties in conjunction with the Department of Housing and Public Works, the mixed-use Boggo Road Gaol site in Dutton Park will become home to approximately 500 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, as well as an urban village precinct. Two of the gaol’s three-storey cell blocks will be transformed into dining and bar areas, with Calile Malouf Investments Pty Ltd, creators of James Street Market, undertaking the redevelopment.

In a nod to the 131-year-old prison’s rich history, the development also looks to house a museum within the most well-preserved cell block, with the current famed prison tours set to stay. The prison’s original courtyard will be converted into a small public park, adding to the proposed green space surrounding the development.
