World Press Photo exhibition returns to Brisbane Powerhouse
On October 15, 2011, the people of Yemen’s capital Sanaa protested against the rise of President Ali Abdullah Saleh resulting in nine deaths and dozens injured. Inside a mosque being used as a hospital for the injured, a woman held a wounded relative in her arms. It was this scene that Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda stumbled upon while working on an assignment for The New York Times in Yemen, and one he chose to capture.
Selected by the international jury of the World Press Photo Contest, Samuel’s photograph has been named World Press Photo of the Year 2011. In its 55th year, this annual exhibition of heart-warming, comical, serious and confronting imagery from world events returns to Brisbane Powerhouse this weekend.
From arts and contemporary issues to daily life, portraits and sport, this contest encourages high standards of photojournalism with 57 photographers of 24 nationalities awarded this year from more than 100,000 entries. Presenting a moving collection of photography with accompanying written stories, World Press Photo is a free exhibition running June 2–24.
