UV boi فوق بنفسجي, musician, FOMO Festival

You don’t have to follow anything if you just create from the heart ...

Emmanuel John will be familiar to many under the name of UV boi فوق بنفسجي , one of the brightest young stars in the Australian electronic music scene. Known for creating silky smooth beats with atmospheric touches, UV boi has earned rave reviews since emerging onto the scene in 2014. This year has been a big one for the producer, performing at Splendour in the Grass and releasing two singles, both of which have clocked more than 60,000 listens apiece on SoundCloud, not to mention extensive airplay on national radio. UV boi will be performing at FOMO Festival in early January 2016, sharing the bill with the likes of Jamie xx, RL Grime and Flight Facilities. Ahead of his performance, we caught up with the young musician to talk about his influences and how the ride to success has been so far.

To start with, I’d love to know when you first discovered your love of music?
Okay, it’s kind of a funny story – well, not really funny but it’s cool. So my sister used to do dancing and I used to record her doing dancing and stuff – this was back in 2010 – and I was using Windows Movie Maker. That program had an audio section at the bottom and at the time I was listening to hardstyle music and techno so I was mashing those two together. I thought it was really cool and that I’d love to do it some more, then someone else put me onto a different program, which made mixing things easier. From there I graduated to getting a tool where I could actually begin producing my own stuff. I began sampling records from vinyl that I bought, and then I graduated to creating my own music.

So did it all come about by chance? You never thought that one day you’d want to be a professional musician?
Yeah, it was all by chance I suppose. Like, from the moment I heard hardstyle I felt that I really loved music – that melodic but heavy-hitting nature really made me fall in love with it. I think the first hardstyle artist I loved was Yellow Claw. At one point I thought ‘I suck at this, I can’t do it’ or whatever and I gave up for a little bit, but once I tried creating originals I fell in love with it again. And now I don’t think I would do anything else apart from music.

After that point, when did you start performing live?
My first gig was July or August of 2014. Since then I’ve been really busy with touring and performing. It’s been really amazing.

Obviously 2015 has been a huge year for you – even crazier when you realise your first show was only in 2014 – now you’ve played at Splendour in the Grass and getting massive rotation on triple j – from your perspective how has 2015 been for you?
It has been crazy, especially because I had only released one song that whole first year I suppose. Even before that I had never released anything official, it was all from the internet. To be able to play all these shows because of that has been amazing. I’m really excited to release more music and to see how things go from there.

You’ve had two big songs come out this year – ‘LUV’ and ‘If She, If He’ – how did those songs come about?
I made LUV probably four months prior to it being released. It all came together so smoothly and naturally, like Brasstracks hit me up on Twitter and said that they’d really love to make a song – and with my friend Fionn we’d made a few songs beforehand – I am really glad I had those two on-board for that song. For ‘If She’ I wanted to try something different, I wanted to explore different sounds. I think with that song I’ve definitely started seeing myself mature, and I’m really starting to make the music I want to make.

You are still new to the music scene and have only been in the game a little while, but what would you say are some of the elements that your music has that isn’t common in the scene right now?
Oh wow. There are so many amazing electronic acts – especially in the Australian scene – right now. Everyone is exploring and creating different styles but Australia doesn’t have that one style that is recognisable, I think I’m just doing something upbeat. I can’t really say too much on how it’s different, I’m just creating on feeling.

What are you working towards at the moment, recording wise?
For the past year I have been working on my EP, it’s coming really close to being complete now and it’s almost ready for release. It will be out in April next year. There are four tracks in there plus an intro, outro and interlude. It’s not so much an EP it’s more of a mini body of work, which tells an entire story.

Will the EP include the songs you’ve released this year?
Yeah, it will include ‘If She, If He’ but not ‘LUV’, I think there is one more single coming out from the EP before the release of the whole thing.

Can you tell us anything about the overall style of the new material? What are you hoping people latch on to?
So, I always try to not pigeonhole myself into a certain sound, but there is an overall UV boi vibe to it, I guess. I tried to make some really different sounds for each song. I can’t even really explain what they sound like but it just evokes a really nice feeling when I listen to it so I hope it happens for listeners too.

Looking forward to the near future, you are playing FOMO Festival early next year alongside some pretty big names. What do you like about playing these big festivals and did you expect to be playing them so soon?
No, not at all. Everything still feels like a really big dream. Some days I would wake up and think that I didn’t need to do anything because I am doing music so much now and I am living my dream right. It’s been a really big blessing and I am so excited to play these shows and meet the other artists that are playing on the bill with me – all these acts that I listened to when I was younger and always dreamed of meeting. The experience gives me a feeling I can’t really explain.

Are you feeling comfortable on stage now? With all these shows would you say you are in a groove performing now?
Everything in the show that I did from the beginning, I’ve reflected back on and thought how I could improve the next show. Now I have a lot of confidence on stage that I didn’t have from the beginning.

How is all the new material coming together, production wise? Do you still create in your bedroom or are you moving to more professional set ups?
I think I still feel most comfortable when I am in my room. I have experienced the studio, but my work progress usually happens when I am really tired – early in the morning therefore I think I will always stick to being a bedroom producer.

The electronic music scene is very strong and there is a great community of artists that support each other. What are some Australian acts that you are really digging now and you think are doing amazing things in your eyes?
My really good friends Cosmos Midnight are about to release an EP, and I have been a long time fan of theirs even before UV boi. I think they are the really big act that I am excited for. Also Basenji, Young Franco, Wave Racer, Sable – it’s a really cool group of friends I have made through music, which has been really nice and I am happy to have them.

Is there a lot of advice giving and collaboration between acts?
Yeah, we are all musicians and everything, so when we all hang out we create small ideas to show each other what we are working on and get feedback. It’s always good to have another peer giving feedback on what you’ve created.

You’ve dabbled in remixing as well, what is it about a song that makes you want to put your own spin on it?
I am quite selective of what songs I do remix – I’d definitely have to love the song and see if there is room in there to take it in a different direction. I’ll listen to it and there’d be that one certain sound or one certain piece and I will just build from there and think about how I’d like to improve the sound.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?
It’s not so much advice I really just like to follow my own sayings – just create what you love. You don’t have to follow anything if you just create from the heart. That’s what I say to myself, to not subscribe to a certain sound but to create whatever you think is right.
