Sarah Kanowski, GOMA Talks Host, APT7
Kindness, generosity and public libraries ...
As the host of Brisbane-based Radio National program Weekend Arts, Sarah Kanoswki’s Saturday involves a fair amount of un-weekend-related activities. But it’s this delivery of arts, literature, film and music features and interviews that has gained her a position presenting this week’s GOMA Talks session. Discussing the topic ‘Living Contemporary Culture’, Sarah will explore how everyday life and culture are expressed through art forms, with panelists Oscar Kightley, Alison Page, Annette Shun Wah and John Wilsteed. This third GOMA Talks evening will commence at 6:30 pm on Thursday March 21. Entry is free and those unable to attend can watch the webcast live at www.qagaom.qld.gov.au. The Weekend Edition caught up with Sarah beforehand to chat inspirations and perfect weekends.
How do you like to start your weekend?
My work week officially ends on Saturday at 5:00 pm, so that is followed as quickly as possible by a bike ride home along the river to food and vino on the back verandah.
What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday morning?
I present Weekend Arts on ABC Radio National on a Saturday afternoon, so Saturday mornings are busy. My favourite thing is getting a large coffee from champ kitchen + bar at the bottom of the ABC building.
How do you like to unwind?
Sitting in the garden with my family, imagining how the garden could look if I did less sitting and more gardening
What are your essentials for a well-spent weekend?
Sleep, newspapers and a walk for as long as my three-year-old and five-year-old will consent to.
What’s something you’ve been meaning to do on the weekend but haven’t got around to yet?
Sleep!
What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday evening?
Read the Saturday papers, watch the documentary on ABC 2, share a glass of wine with my lovely husband, and then retreat for a long bath with a good book.
What are you looking forward to next weekend?
Catching up with friends visiting from Tasmania for APT7.
What are you reading at the moment?
The Stranger’s Child by Alan Hollinghurst and Grace Paley’s Collected Poems.
What inspires you?
Kindness, generosity and public libraries.
What was your childhood dream?
To travel far and wide.
What has been your greatest achievement?
Like every parent, it has to be staying sane, and occasionally happy, while parenting. Surviving the Amazon in a leaky canoe with an unhappy chicken comes a distant second.
What is success to you?
Argh, the word alone is enough to give me an anxiety attack! Let’s say, living each day as fully as possible.
What are your words of wisdom?
‘My one regret in life is that I am not someone else’ – Woody Allen.
Only a local would know … summer storms are the best thing about living in Brisbane.
