Juliette McConachy, Founder, Naked Gaia

Success to me is a healthy body, an inspired creative mind and a happy heart ...

Eating a meal of fresh ingredients is an intimate way of connecting with nature that nourishes both the mind and body. After a lifestyle change that involved eating only wholesome foods, Juliette McConachy discovered her own inner peace in life. Now running her own natural-foods business, Naked Gaia, Juliette hopes to empower others to embrace a positive mindset through food. Her venture started with nutrient-packed Gaia Balls and has extended to include raw vegan cakes and, most recently, chocolate-making workshops for those wanting to learn how to create their own raw treats. Through her work at Naked Gaia, Juliette hopes to encourage people to develop a deeper awareness of the importance of establishing a positive relationship with food and adopting a positive frame of mind. The Weekend Edition sat down with Juliette to chat about how she likes to spend her weekends.

How do you like to start your weekend?
The perfect start to the weekend for me is a slow but early rise (7:00 am at the latest), followed by a potter about my home. Starting the weekend with a clear, love-filled home and the ultimate life-force breakfast sets me up for a free-spirited, adventure-filled weekend.

What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday morning?
Saturday mornings are a mystery to me. I don’t have a set routine for them and they seem to slip through my fingers too often. If I could choose a new favourite Saturday thing, which I might do now, it would be a bike ride or an early morning stroll along the Brisbane River.

How do you like to unwind?
That depends on my energy levels – if I’ve had a big day in the kitchen and I need to burn off a little excess cacao, I’ll throw a frisbee, jump on a slack line or do a little free-form yoga. If I’m already tired, I’ll unwind with intimate conversations, cups of tea and cuddles with my housemate or my lover, whoever I tackle first. An any-given-moment unwind for me is a sigh – it is one of life’s juiciest expressions.

What are your essentials for a well-spent weekend?
There must be a house blitz at some point and a leisurely and sociable Sunday-morning market stroll. Flowers on the kitchen table and a fridge full of fresh organic veggies will have me ecstatic. Throw in a little bit of family, some friends and a balancing dose of solace, then mix in a little dirt under the nails, so I know I’ve had my hands on the Earth, and I’ll be adequately satisfied.

What’s something you’ve been meaning to do on the weekend but haven’t got around to yet?
I use to rock climb a lot at Kangaroo Point and I’d love to get back into a rhythm with that.

What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday evening?
I’m a home bunny. Sunday evenings are the perfect time to prepare a delicious meal with all of those fresh market goodies and feed the ones I love. Then get to bed early.

What are you looking forward to next weekend?
Next weekend I’ll be at Woodford Folk Festival immersed in another of my passions – Zenthai Shiatsu. Along with a team of therapists, I will be offering Zenthai Shiatsu therapy beneath the trees. I’m also just looking forward to a good-old boogie to some bluegrass and a little reggae.

What are you reading at the moment?
I have several books on the go at the moment – I’m a Gemini, so one is never enough of anything. I’m reading Between Heaven and Earth: A Guide to Chinese Medicine by Harriet Beinfield, The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran (over and over again), as well as my teacher Gwyn Williams’ book, The Zen of Touch.

What inspires you?
I am outrageously inspired by people who have the courage, love and respect for all of life that leads them to give their hearts to this world and remain 100% committed to being who they truly are. I’m inspired by yoga teachers, artists, cooks, healers, mothers, fathers, tradesmen, tradeswomen, gardeners and poets – basically anyone who walks a path of happiness and doesn’t claim it as the only way, but welcomes all paths and smiles at every passerby. I’m also inspired by nature and the perfection of life on this planet. That we are exactly how far we are away from the sun, spinning at just the right speed with all the perfect chemistry available for life to spring, inspires me greatly.

What was your childhood dream?
Again, being that I am a Gemini, I had many many childhood dreams. My main dream, however, was to open a retreat centre where people could bathe beneath the stars at night and swim in the river by day. I also wanted a space where I could run workshops. I don’t know that I knew what kind of workshops I wanted to run, or what a workshop even was for, but I knew I wanted to run them. I wanted to create a space where people could come together for the purpose of feeling good in themselves and to connect, inspire and share with one another. To eat fresh food from the gardens, drink tea and laugh a lot. To sing beneath the moon and make things out of clay. This childhood dream still follows me around; so does my inner child …

What has been your greatest achievement?
In a practical sense, my greatest achievement has been my business. Starting from scratch with no idea and continuing to scratch until it became a fully fledged business that I now make my living from, and direct and expand in whatever creative way I choose feels fabulous. But, my heart’s greatest achievement is finding my commitment to a lifestyle of health, wellness, harmony and joy. It’s something to come to a place inside yourself where you are not only ready, but you also feel there is no other choice other than to commit to stepping outside the normal constructs of society and making your own way towards a richer truth for yourself. It feels amazing to be walking this path.

What is success to you?
Success to me is a healthy body, an inspired creative mind and a happy heart. Happy heart success is a garden full of vegetables with which to feed a table full of hungry bellies, and the following arrival of satisfied smiles when plates are licked clean and conversation seems too intrusive for the current state of bliss. Inspired creative mind success is winning the battle over the mind’s tendency to doubt or discourage. Saying ‘excuse me buddy but I’m going for it, so back off’ and creating magic anyway despite your fears. Healthy body success is knowing how to nourish myself and others, and doing so without hesitation.

What are your words of wisdom?
Let life slide through you like children on a slippery dip. Every now and then a little prat of a kid gets on to cause havoc, but, as is the nature of a slippery dip, what jumps on must eventually slide off. So long as you pay them no mind and don’t get in their way at all, at some point even the little prats have no choice but to slide on by. Enjoy the playful children but let them slide by too, for no matter how happy a child is, anyone will kick up a stink if you try to hold on to them for too long. And remember, whether little prat or playful angel, it’s all the same in the end – every kid will slide off the plastic and onto the grass eventually, and then it’s a long walk back up the hill before they can jump back on again, by which time they are a different person.

Life is a slippery dip, your moments are children, love every single one and let the soapy buggers keep sliding on by because they’re coming at you thick and fast. Who would want to miss a single beautiful one?

Finally, life is not a serious as some would have you believe.
