Edward Guglielmino, Musician, Bands Of Your Town

Bacon, sun, seawater, beer ...

Queensland’s major songwriting prize, the Grant McLennan Memorial Fellowship is up for grabs this weekend, to be announced at Bands of Your Town at Judith Wright Centre. Local finalist Edward Guglielmino is a little shaky – one, from the anticipation and pathways the prize could present, and, two, from the epic sleepless weekend that was music fest Splendour in the Grass last weekend. Edward, along with last year’s winner Scott Spark and the three other finalists, will perform at Bands of Your Town. With days spent as a music tutor at universities and nights touring his latest album Sunshine State, Edward exudes dedication to furthering his avant-garde sound and shows no signs of slowing down with his band also launching its new single ‘You’ll Be The Death Of Me’ this weekend. The Weekend Edition took five with Edward to discover his perfect weekend.

How do you like to start your weekend?
Okay, from the get-go I need to disclose that I don’t work a regular week, I am a tutor, lecturer, and musician professionally so my timetable is different week to week. So a break always starts with a big breakfast at a cafe. Although, on an actual weekend, I would probably avoid the popular spots and make my own to avoid big crowds.

What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday morning?
Sleep.

How do you like to unwind?
I love a movie marathon – lots of movies in a cinema one after the other with popcorn and lollies.

What are your essentials for a well-spent weekend?
Bloody Marys, phone with a flat battery, bacon, sun, seawater, beer, $200 car, trees, late nights and sleep-ins.

What’s something you’ve been meaning to do on the weekend but haven’t got around to yet?
Finish my master’s thesis.

What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday evening?
Go to Live Spark at the Brisbane Powerhouse and see a local musician.

What are you looking forward to next weekend?
I’m playing at the Judith Wright Centre as part of Bands Of Your Town as a finalist for the Grant McLennan Memorial Fellowship.

What are you reading at the moment?
Carl Jung’s collected essays.

What inspires you?
Unexpected beauty.

What was your childhood dream?
I wanted to be like Yahoo Serious’ character in Young Einstein. I am about 30% of the way there but still working on it.

What has been your greatest achievement?
My relationship and friendship with my partner.

What is success to you?
Time to do what you love and contentment.

What are your words of wisdom?
There is a very good chance you only live once, and you can’t take money or debt with you to the other side, so live your dream. If people tell you that you should be doing something else, it is because they want you to lead the same unhappy life that they have.
