Jess Marshall, blogger, JESKAALEE

If I can post an inspiring quote or image and brighten one person's day, it's all worthwhile ...

If you frequently find yourself lost in the depths of Instagram chances are you’re already well familiar with JESKAALEE and if you’re not, you should be. JESKAALEE is the work of model, fitness enthusiast and all-round bundle of happiness Jess Marshall. Last year, Jess published her first e-book called Be You, Be True, which offers inspiring interviews, positive affirmations, recipes, fashion, and all kinds of advice necessary to become the perfect version of yourself. Through her work and blogging journey, Jess aspires to inspire, empower and connect with like-minded people around the world. We had a chat with Jess about what it takes to make it as a blogger and some of her secrets to staying motivated.

What inspired you to start your own blog?
It all started when an acquaintance mentioned that I should start a blog as they noticed I loved taking photos of my daily outfits and posting them to Instagram, that was back in the early days before Instagram became popular. I did some research about what it would take to create a blog by looking at other bloggers but ultimately I wanted to create something that was authentically me that would showcase all the things I love, mainly fashion, living a healthy lifestyle, striving to be positive and bringing positivity to others. I love making people smile.

What were some of the challenges you faced in the early days?
One massive aspect of being a blogger is having connections with PR agencies, designers and brands. When starting out I didn’t have a lot of connections so it took me a while to build relationships. Once I started to make a name for myself and connect with people it helped me on my way to where I am today.

You’ve amassed over 43,000 followers on Instagram alone, how important has social media been in establishing JESKAALEE?
Social media is a huge part of being a blogger nowadays as it’s a way of sharing everything you want to express with your viewers, so it has played a really big part in getting my name out to the world.

What’s the best part about being a blogger?
One of my favourite parts of being a blogger is that I get to be creative and express myself. Another is going to events and making connections and friendships with other bloggers, creatives and like-minded people.

Scrolling your Instagram feed it’s easy to get the impression that it’s all long lunches and swims at the beach. Is there a less glamorous side of being a blogger or is it really that amazing?
If only all my days were filled with long lunches and swims at the beach! A girl can dream. Trying to fit in photo shoots between other work and in-between bad weather days, late nights of writing and replying to emails, the social media lulls and creative blocks are all a part of it but I wouldn’t change any of it as it is what makes everything come together.

How do you stay motivated to keep doing what you do?
I like to think I am my own motivator as all that I share with others is lifting me up too. If I can post an inspiring quote or image and brighten one person’s day, it’s all worthwhile.

Do you find there are any misconceptions people have about being a model/blogger?
Yes of course, everyone has a different perspective and some do have a preconceived view of what a ‘blogger/model’ is. Many people I have met on my journey have been happily surprised that I am a down-to-earth person and I try my best to express this through my blog and social media too.

What are your ultimate plans for your blog/blogging career?
Ideally I would love to have blogging as my sole career and travel to other countries around the world sharing my journey and inspiring my viewers through my blog.

What have been some of your career highlights so far?
Some career highlights would be working on some projects with iconic Australian activewear label Lorna Jane, a brand that screams positivity and empowerment. Also meeting the beautiful Sara Donaldson of blog Harper & Harley, seeing how successful she is was a great inspiration to continue doing what I love.

Tell us about Be You, Be True?
Be You, Be True is a free E-book I created in 2014 full of everything empowering for women wanting to become the best version of themselves. Inside you will find inspiring interviews, recipes, fashion information, a bunch of positive affirmations, which are all things that have helped me on my own journey.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to start a blog today?
Do your own thing, find something about yourself and your own style that is unique and individual and embrace it. Always work hard, stay humble and be true to yourself and your values.

You’re known for radiating positivity. How do you turn a bad day around?
It is probably a bit corny but I have a whole Pinterest board of inspiring quotes. Words inspire me especially encouraging ones that can turn a negative thought into a positive one. I also have a wonderful support network as I like to surround myself with positive people.
