Get a little rugged with a spot of fishing

Being a city slicker doesn’t mean that you should completely ignore your inner hunter/gather instincts (unless that instinct is telling you to wrestle a wild animal, in which case we suggest suppressing it completely). Get some dirt under those fingernails by indulging in a spot of fishing instead.

Some of the best shore-fishing spots in and around Brisbane are near the mouth of Breakfast Creek, Nudgee Beach, the jetty at Shorncliffe, Schulz Canal in Nundah, the rock walls at Pinkenba and Hornibrook Bridge at Redcliffe. But before heading out, you’ll need to ensure you have all the necessary gear – pocket knife, rod, bait, sinkers, hooks, bucket for your catch, lures and swivels are the essentials.

Whilst fashion and fishing are not always synonymous, you can dress for the occasion by pairing a neutral-coloured fishing shirt with khaki, camel or camouflage-printed pants and a pair of sunglasses. A fishing vest and a hat can also be considered for your outfit.

The final consideration for your fishing expedition is the company you choose to keep, as good company always makes the pastime more enjoyable. Matt Brady from Fortitude Valley menswear boutique The Outpost leads a double life as an avid angler and coordinator of The Outpost Sports and Recreation Club. The club is organised via Facebook and provides gents with a means to meet other urban fishermen. The Outpost also has pocket knives and other handy gadgets from Opinel for the dapper angler.
