TWE The Art of Shopping

Snap up a vintage poster at Woolloongabba’s The Art of Shopping

Before television, full page ads in newspapers and magazines were the main source of advertising communication, alongside posters and flyers pasted around the streets or placed inside shop windows. Now as advertisers move towards digital advertising, these tangible pieces of history become all the more coveted.

SideStreet Vintage is holding a major exhibition of advertising art of the 20th century entitled The Art of Shopping, June 6–23 at Woolloongabba Antique Centre. From cosmetic and cigarette ads to classic film and Coca-Cola posters, the exhibition captures a glimpse into the old-school Mad Men-esque world of advertising.

Renowned London-based collector Roy Sims will have a unique selection of pieces in the exhibition, including movie day-bills and printed trade and brand advertising that he has been collecting for decades. Advertisements for luxury fashion brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Bally will make up part of the exhibit, alongside World World II propaganda posters and advertising material spanning fuel, cars, alcohol and tobacco. You can also purchase an item in the exhibit if it catches your eye. The Art of Shopping will run June 6–23, Monday to Sunday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
