Slip in to a pair of overalls this winter
Traditionally associated with images of farmers and railroad labourers working in the harsh sunshine, overalls are made from hardy, durable fabrics, providing comfort and protection from the elements.
Fast-forward to the 1990s and we ran amok in short overalls (shorteralls? … thanks Lena) in summer, while skirt versions replaced pinafore dresses. As kids, full-length denim and corduroy designs looked particularly sweet layered over a woollen skivvy, while the teenage wearer grunged up a pair with a black tee and one strap unbuckled for extra attitude.
These days, classic pairings see overalls worn with a plain white or Breton-striped t-shirt and wedges, or rugged up in a cosy jumper and beanie atop your crown. 3.1 Phillip Lim has taken this season’s leather obsession further with a pink pair of nubuck leather overalls, featuring adjustable shoulder straps and chest and patch pockets. Online retailer ASOS houses an array of styles, including vintage washes, colours and prints across its selection of dungarees, with River Island’s acid wash design a particular favourite. Locally, you can find a few pairs amongst the vintage fashions of Sunday Social in Winn Lane.
