The Weekend Series: five Netflix Original shows to look forward to this year

Since Netflix was launched, it’s fair to say that many of us are now far less social than we used to be. And for good reason; we now have a smorgasbord to TV shows to binge on. The streaming media company recently announced the US release dates for a bevy of new shows, and while we’re still unclear on release dates here in Oz, here’s a sample of what you can look forward to in 2016.

Love
Who’s in it? Gillian Jacobs, Paul Rust
What’s so special about it? It’s been almost a decade since the formidable Judd Apatow has created a TV series, but he’s back with a new, off-beat rom-com, Love. The half-hour series looks at love in an honest way, sans the rose-colour glasses. It delves into the relationship of Gus (Paul Rust) and Mickey (Gillian Jacobs) in all its sticky, confusing and humiliating glory. Prepare to be amused.

Fuller House
Who’s in it? Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, Andrea Gibbler, Dave Coulier, John Stamos, Lori Loughlin
What’s so special about it? Children of the ‘80s rejoice! Almost 20 years after the series finale of Full House, the sitcom’s highly-anticipated sequel series, Fuller House, is about to deliver a hefty dose nostalgia. The storyline follows a recently widowed D.J. Tanner-Fuller, the mother of three young children, who finds new roommates in her sister, Stephanie, a struggling musician, and her best friend, Kimmy. While most of the original cast aren’t regulars in the series, diehard fans will be pleased to note that Uncle Joey, Uncle Jessie and Becky will make an appearance.

House of Cards – Season 4
Who’s in it? Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Nathan Darrow, Neve Campbell
What’s so special about it? For those champing at the bit for more of Kevin Spacey’s political drama House of Cards, you’re in luck. Follow the cunning and bloodthirsty exploits of Frank Underwood, who just happens to be one of the most powerful men on Earth – the President of the United States of America. This season sees Party of Five alumna Neve Campbell join the already star-studded cast.

Orange is the New Black – Season 4
Who’s in it? Taylor Schilling, Michael Harney, Kate Mulgrew, Taryn Manning
What’s so special about it? Watching Orange is the New Black is like opening a can of Pringles: once you start, you can’t stop. The addictive series tells the tale of Piper Chapman, a woman in her thirties who is sentenced to 15 months in prison after being convicted of a decade-old crime of transporting money to her drug-dealing girlfriend.

The Get Down
Who’s in it? Jimmy Smits, Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Shameik Moore, Skylan Brooks
What’s so special about it? From Aussie visionary Baz Luhrmann, The Get Down is a gritty music-driven series set in 1970s New York City – broken down, beaten up, and on the verge of bankruptcy. It revolves around a ragtag crew of South Bronx teens who are wild in the streets, with no one to shelter them, except each other. Baz’s first foray into the world of television, The Get Down is shaping up to be some of his finest work.

Notable mentions: If you can find the time in your busy television-watching schedule, you’re also sure to enjoy Will Arnett’s new comedy Flaked, Season 2 of the hilarious Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Gerard Depardieu’s French drama Marseille, Season 2 of Gracie and Frankie, Winona Ryder’s newest project Stranger Things, and Chelsea Handler’s docu-series Chelsea Does.
