TWE man bracelets

The history of manly bracelets

While these days manly wrist adornment is usually limited to a suave watch, the gentleman’s bracelet dates back to ancient times.

It all began with cavemen wearing bracelets made from bone, stone and seashells to ward off evil. Skip forward to the Egyptians of the Bronze Age and you would have found King Tut buried wearing several of his wrist wraps, which symbolised wealth. The 1960s saw hemp and friendship bracelets develop in a multitude of colours and weaves, also signifying a commitment to saving the earth. Then came the thin red Kabbalah string, which – while a Jewish folk custom to ward off misfortune and negative energy – had a celebrity moment for a while there. Now metal, beaded, leather, woven and nautical types are snaking their way around gentlemanly wrists, in a somewhat more serious and less symbolic manner.

If you’re a man of Mr Porter-esque standards, browse the dapper range of wristwear here. Whether it’s an anchor-looped rope number for beachside dwelling or to represent your love of sailing, or a simple woven or skinny beaded style, embrace these bands like any another accessory you’ve previously conquered – like the pocket square, tie pin and money clip.
