Relax by the flicker of Maison Balzac candlelight
In the past, candles served either as a decorative ornament, as a light source displayed on candlesticks in the good dining room (only to be lit in the company of guests), or as part of an emergency blackout kit. Thankfully, times have changed a new cohort of candlemakers is creating sweetly fragranced candles that make a soak in the tub or mid-week glass of red all the more indulgent.
Crafted in Australia by Elise Pioch, Maison Balzac candles pay homage to Elise’s French heritage and her great great grandfather, French playwright and novelist Honoré de Balzac.
While she now resides in Australia, Elise spent a much of her childhood in the south of France and her candles are inspired by the sweet fragrances that linger in her memory from this period. Each candle is made from soy wax, pure cotton wicks and essential oils. The range currently has five scents, created from a blend of natural fragrances including tea rose, rose geranium, orange flower, clove buds and cedarwoood.
AP Design House in Paddington stocks all five of the different scents, along with glass domes that can be used to gently extinguish a candle’s flame and keep it from collecting dust.
