The Weekend Series: five videos to help you procrastinate today

Look, we take our work seriously at The Weekend Edition but sometimes we need to take five and focus on something else before we can charge ahead with our work. Unfortunately, sometimes we find ourselves stuck in a procrastination spiral. If you are easily distracted like us or are looking for an excuse to procrastinate, we have compiled a quick list of YouTube videos and channels that will have you forgetting all about your commitments. The only catch – you can’t blame us when you hit your deadline with nothing to show.

AsapSCIENCE – Amazing facts to blow your mind
Here is something for the curious minds out there. If you aren’t going to be working you might as well be learning, and AsapSCIENCE makes learning fun with its videos tackling big science questions in ways we laypersons can understand. Want an answer to what came first, the chicken or the egg? They’ve got a video for that. Does being cold actually make you sick? Well, they tackled that one too. Should you subscribe to this channel, expect your productivity to go down but your general knowledge to go up. That’s a fair trade off in our opinion.

Primitive Technology – Building a primitive thatched dome hut from scratch
If the world ended and we had to rely on outdoor skills to survive, how would you go? If the answer is ‘not well’ then join the club and subscribe to Primitive Technology. One adventurous soul based in Far North Queensland has started a channel where he builds primitive huts and tools using natural materials in the wild. Learn how to make a bow and arrow, a celt stone axe, firesticks and more and ensure you know what to do if you are stuck in the wilderness.

Tim Urban – Inside the mind of a master procrastinator
So, this selection might seem a bit meta but we couldn’t help including this video. Tim Urban is a popular writer who has dealt with his fair share of deadlines and is as much of a procrastinator as anyone. In this video, Tim dissects why we fall into bad habits and how – without fail – we end up following the Wikipedia rabbit hole and occupying ourselves with random distractions. You can consider watching this video another example of procrastination or you can tell yourself (and your boss) that you are researching better working strategies.

Hydraulic Press Channel – Can you fold paper more than 7 times with the hydraulic press
Of all the channels that are going viral in recent times, this one might be the most bizarre. An enterprising gent with a hydraulic press has decided to start a channel showing how various items fare when placed under immense physical pressure. Golf balls, bowling balls, legos, rubber ducks and a Nokia 3310 are pressed in various videos, which average more than a million views for episode. It’s engrossing viewing, if a little bit on the weird side.

Everything is Film – The #Catquarium 360º Cat Cafe
It wouldn’t be a procrastination session without a good cat video, and this one in particular is extra special. Everything is Film spent a few hours filming inside the KitTea Cat Cafe in San Francisco in 360 degrees. Audiences can drag their viewpoint to watch different happenings around the café, including catfights, cats playing with toys and even an up close look at the effects of catnip. Be prepared to lose a good hour watching these kitties at play.
