Dr Pilkington's Miracle Cider

Drink the moustachioed Dr Pilkington’s Miracle Cider

Sporting a label in classic tones of cream and black with a moustachioed man as the mascot, the latest cider to grace the liquor shelves was bound to catch our eye. Dubbed Dr Pilkington’s Miracle Cider, this 500 ml bubbly apple offering is turning heads with its quirky design before you even pop the cap.

Reminiscent of the snake-oil salesmen of yesteryear who vended potions that claimed to cure the most peculiar of ailments, Dr Pilkington himself has donned a top hat and monocle for his mischievous cidermaking. Handcrafted from crunchy apples from the sun-dappled orchards of South Australia, Dr Pilkington’s Miracle Cider is the creation of microbrewery McLaren Vale Beer Company. Founded by a couple of craft-beer lovers in 2008, McLaren Vale Beer Company started out crafting its beloved VALE/ALE before expanding to a dark and dry lager and an Indian Pale Ale.

Now the lads are having a bit of fun with a cider side project that’s dry and crisp, with just the right amount of sweetness. The quirk factor extends to the list of troubles this sparkling tonic claims to solve revealed on the side of the bottle. From curing curly hair and left-handedness to the inability to whistle, Mr Pilkington’s Miracle Cider apparently does a lot more than taste good and quench your thirst. It even claims to alleviate troubles caused by grey spotted horses, bowerbirds, The French and avocadoes – though we don’t believe someone could actually be troubled by delicious avocadoes.

With no plans in sight for a secure future for the cheeky brand, pick up a bottle from Dan Murphy’s or BWS while you can.
