Records Vinyl in Brisbane

Ditch digital for some top vinyl from around town

With the introduction of Spotify and Pandora locally, we’ve found less of a need to go seeking out a hard-copy CD in order to treat our ears to the latest tunes. But all that digital noise cannot compare to the smooth croon of vinyl, and so we’ve found ourselves investing more and more in the modern LP. Here are some record haunts around town where you can spend your well-earned pennies on some sweet vinyl.

The Record Exchange
Backing on to Burnett Lane, The Record Exchange sells new and secondhand music across vinyl, CD and cassette, as well as music videos and DVDs. This dusty, offbeat, legendary alcove of sound lets you exchange old records, find new ones, pick up your first record player or rediscover that beloved band t-shirt your significant other threw out years ago while you weren’t looking.

Rocking Horse Records
A passionate and undying soldier in the delivery of damn fine tunes to Brisbane listeners’ ears, Rocking Horse Records has served us a few heartbeat skips with fears of closing its doors, but still it endures the strains of the digital world to bring us tangible lovers our vinyl fix. You can still trade secondhand stock for cash or exchange for something from the store’s selection of new and used music.

Kill The Music
This independent record store not only stocks a hefty amount of punk, rock and hardcore vinyl, but also sees Kill The Music tees and totes, and threads from Vans, Afends, Hollow Bones and Santa Cruz. You’ll also find band tees, snapbacks, sneakers, CDs and Uppercut Deluxe goods in-store.

Jet Black Cat Music
Not only can you find Shannon’s superb selection of new and back catalogue vinyl and CD gems at Jet Black Cat in West End, but expect nights of listening parties, music trivia (there’s one coming up on March 24) and in-store gigs (Little Casino is playing April 3). More here.

More about town
Also check out Egg Records in West End and Butter Beats in Fortitude Valley, which both made the move from the city to their respective suburbs last year. There’s also TITLE at South Bank and Fortitude Valley, which stocks a discerning array of jazz, classical and world music, along with the tunes of ECM artists. Vinyl fiends can also hunt through the supply at Junk Bar or visit the trooper of a record stand in the middle of the West End Markets.
