Top five bike trails to discover this weekend

The ‘River City’ offers more than 1100 km of scenic bikeways and shared pathways, so this weekend we’re skipping the gym and strapping on the helmet instead. Check out our top five picks for the ultimate ride-and-refuel trails in Brisbane.

Bicentennial Bikeway
As Brisbane’s most popular shared pathway, the Bicentennial Bikeway connects the CBD to Toowong via Coronation Drive, carrying up to 6500 commuters and explorers each day. Take advantage of Brisbane City Council’s upgrades and almost 3 km of separated pedestrian and cycling pathways, while enjoying gorgeous views of Brisbane River and the city skyline. Take a slight detour for a coffee or hot chocolate from Bunker in Milton, before continuing on to South Bank for a healthy acai bowl from Kiss The Berry or a well-earned beer at The Charming Squire. Alternatively, head into the city and grab a picnic basket from The Gardens Cafe to enjoy in the City Botanic Gardens.

South Bank and West End
This bike trail measures just under 5 km one way and is an enjoyable cruise no matter which direction you choose to head in. Starting at the City Botanic Gardens, cross the Goodwill Bridge and head along the river at South Bank to the cultural precinct. Take a break and check out the latest exhibitions at the Gallery of Modern Art or the Queensland Museum – both are currently offering great school holiday programs – before enjoying a snack at the GOMA Cafe Bistro or Espresso Garage. If your buns can handle a little extra cycling, continue on to West End and refuel with lunch at Plenty and a grocery shop at Davies Park Market on a Saturday morning, or stop in at the hive of activity that is Boundary Street Markets.

Newstead to Eagle Street Pier
This ride measures just under 8 km from Newstead to Eagle Street Pier. Enter from the Teneriffe Ferry Terminal and admire the historic Brisbane Powerhouse as you cruise by, before stopping for a quick cuppa at End of the Road Coffee next to New Farm Park or Double Shot Espresso on Oxlade Drive. Wind your way along the river on the recently reconstructed Riverwalk and admire views of the Story Bridge and city skyline, before reaching your destination Eagle Street Pier for a drink at Riverbar & Kitchen or an epic feast at Navala Churrascaria.

Wynnum Manly Foreshore
For a leisurely ride with water views, you can’t go past Wynnum Manly Foreshore and its 6.1 km of flat, uninterrupted, shared pathways. Start at Elanora Park in Wynnum, cruise through the parklands, take a quick detour to new health hub Bay Blends for a protein ball and a smoothie, before finishing the journey at Manly boat harbour and marina. If you time your visit right, you could even swing by the Wynnum Twilight Market on the second Saturday of every month.

Kedron Brook
The Kedron Brook bikeway feels like a world away from the city as it winds its way along the nature corridor of Kedron Brook. Enjoy a ride of more than 10 km from Stafford/Mitchelton to Nundah, or break it into a shorter trail for beginners and families. Enjoy a sugar hit with some sweet takeaways from Marché du Macaron before pausing for a picnic at one of the many parks or barbecue facilities along the way.

Head online to find out more about Brisbane’s bike trails and Brisbane City Council’s free Cycling Brisbane program, which offers members-only deals and discounts on everything from food, accommodation and bike hire to helmet purchases and post-ride coffees.
