New in man trends: 1970s puffer vest

While we would never encourage the wearing of a long-length puffer jacket complete with fur trim as a style item (especially in our climate), the puffer vest seems to have begun filtering down from the ski slopes to the average mandrobe.

Joining wide-legged pants and skivvies in our current penchant for all things 1970s, the puffer jacket returns to keep us (relatively) toasty this year. The perfect accompaniment to the Queensland climate, a puffer jacket will block the wind and prevent a bone-penetrating chill, without overheating, as is possibly the case with a full down-filled jacket.

The Vanishing Elephant Dixon Puffer Vest combines contrasting brown and navy yoke with a beige shearling collar, while R. M. Williams’ Sherwood Vest is a classy number in suede-microfibre with quilting in sand and black. Country Road stocks the Buffalo Check Gilet as part of its Check Mate range this winter. The quilted puffer vest is made from a wool blend with a high collar and double-up zipper and snap closure. The luxurious English house of Burberry has also converted to the gilet (French for ‘vest’) with down-filled hooded numbers in a variety of colours.
