Zeus brings street Greek to South Bank

For those who love the idea of wrapping their mitts around a soft pita filled with succulent meat and fresh salads, the Greek gods are smiling on you today. Zeus has descended on South Bank, bringing with him a tantalising selection of Greek street eats.

After opening its first eatery in Sydney, Zeus has found a Queensland home between Grey and Little Stanley Streets at South Bank. The dual-frontage space is sleek yet warm and inviting, with the open kitchen running the length of the entire venue framed by white brick tiles and shelves stacked with olive oil, Mythos beer and potted succulents. Signs reading ‘Welcome to our home’ and ‘We’re not just your new neighbours, we’re your new family’ add to the comfortable vibe at Zeus, and while interesting design details give the space a modern feel, authentic touches like an icon of the Virgin Mary and jars of Greek honey remind you of the restaurant’s heritage. Zeus is the brainchild of Costa Anastasiadis, the original founder of Crust Gourmet Pizza, and George Kyrprianou from Pony Brisbane, who grew up together in similar Greek families where the focus was always on food. This culinary love carries through to Zeus, where the pair have made sure they have combined traditional Greek street food with modern flavours.

The menu centres around a selection of eight pitas, filled with a variety of meats from the souvla. Traditionalists will love choices such as the Uncle ‘Tzimmy’ Classic with pork or chicken, tomato, tzatziki, onion, paprika and chips, or the Papou Niko with pork, Aegean slaw, caramelised onion, preserved lemon mayo and parsley. For something a little different, you can opt for the lightly fried soft-shell crab, or the Stavros Stavrou with grilled haloumi and olive tapenade. Partner your pita with traditional Greek dips, or sides such as spanakopita, corn cobs, salads and fetta and oregano chips. And you no longer have to wait for Paniyiri to roll around to get your honey puff fix – Zeus serves both traditional and chocolate loukoumades as well as ice-cream and bougatsa (filo-wrapped vanilla bean custard) to finish your meal.
