Woolly Mammoth Alehouse opens in Fortitude Valley

Regulars to West End institution Lock’n’Load Bistro, will be chuffed to hear that owner Lachlan Bird has been tinkering away at a new beast at which to whet your appetite.

Woolly Mammoth Alehouse is set north of the river in Fortitude Valley, filling the cavernous lodgings that once housed Mustang Bar on Ann Street and upstairs hideaway Coniston Lane. The beer hall has a slick new interior, courtesy of designer Alexander Lotersztain of Derlot – known for the eclectic fit-outs at Alfred & Constance, Kwan Brothers and Depo. Alexander has preserved the existing brickwork and cobblestone pillars of the original building, rounding out the space with hard lumber and modern fittings.

A multi-purpose experiential space, Woolly Mammoth Alehouse brings together three pockets of play – the Alehouse downstairs, and Garden Bar and Mane Stage upstairs. The Garden Bar has been decked out with a sprightly palette and spongy astroturf for indoor bocce, giant jenga and shuffleboard, while the Mane Stage is a dimly lit loft that will host all manner of live music, comedy and burlesque. As for the grub, this new dive will plate up late-night rustic eats while 31 craft beers will rotate on tap, including drops from local brewers. The menu sees flash-fried pardon peppers with smoked salt and a selection of fries with toppings including the likes of blue cheese, chilli and scallions to start, with heftier dogs and subs ready to soak up the plentiful liquid you’re sure to sample upon a visit. The City Dog sees a doughy bun hugging a frankfurt with sauerkraut, cucumber relish, American mustard and cheese, and there are grazing boxes of charcuterie and cheese for the nibbler.

The vegetarian-minded have not been forgotten, with three options of vego pizzas, a vegetarian grazing box – think pickled vegetables, marinated olives, beetroot relish, pardon peppers and Pedro Ximenez-steeped figs – and tasty salads like figs, pear, gorgonzola and rocket. But for those with meatier meals in mind, hoe in to something on a bone – beef short ribs in stout jus with gorgonzola mash, pork knuckle with sauerkraut and peach chutney, or twice-cooked crispy fried chicken with slaw. As for liquid sustenance, there’s a tailored selection of Australian and imported beer, wine and cider, with Four Pillars and West Winds gin, Nikko whisky and Sailor Jerry’s spiced rum standing out amongst the spirits. Perhaps kick your weekend off with a refreshing Chartreuse ‘n’ Juice or Pimms cup from the cocktail menu.

The Garden Bar and Mane Stage are open from this week for BIGSOUND, with a soft opening next week, and the whole venue officially opening on Friday September 26.
