Tippler’s Tap settles into new digs at South Bank

Craft-beer lovers shed a small tear when they heard that Newstead’s Tippler’s Tap was closing its doors. But those tears quickly transformed to those of joy when they realised, in actual fact, it was just relocating to South Bank, taking over from sibling venue Tomahawk Bar to create one pretty rad venue.

While some of Tomahawk Bar’s old fixtures remain, like its striking green-tiled bar and wooden-slat seats, it is clear that Tippler’s Tap has made its mark and taken over. You’ll immediately be greeted by its impressive Yosemite mural, providing a picturesque backdrop to your craft beers and comfort food. Many of Tippler’s Newstead fixtures were brought over and incorporated into the renovations – the outdoor table was crafted from the old wooden kitchen pass, many of the original light fittings were relocated, and you’ll probably recognise a few of the tables and paintings about. Most of the seating in the new space is outdoors – you can opt for a long picnic-style table or cosy up in a timber cabin-style booth. Inside, perch on a high stool and challenge your mates (or Tinder date) to a round on the vintage joystick arcade machine or test your skills at Star Trek pinball.

Tippler’s Tap still goes by the motto of ‘sustaining the good beer drinker’, evidenced by its awe-inspiring 13 rotating beers taps and seemingly endless selection of bottled craft beers. If beer is not your thing, sip on local wines or spirits from craft distilleries, such as Dobson’s Gin from New South Wales or English Harbour rum from the West Indies. Your choice of bev can be paired with Tippler’s Tap signature Chicago-style comfort food – think hot dogs piled with onion, gherkin relish, American mustard, tomato, cucumber, dill pickle, sport peppers and a sprinkle of celery salt, and cheeseburger, chicken, haloumi, Reuben and pulled-pork sliders. Owner Brian Kennedy’s grandmother’s famous chilli still remains on the menu, as well as sides including chicken wings, onion rings and street corn. Tippler’s specials also remain – on Tuesdays you can munch on $2 tacos while playing Cards Against Humanity, Wednesdays mean ribs, and on Sunday you can sample from discounted tap tasting paddles.
