Sink your teeth into some Greek goodness at South Bank’s new The Yiros Shop
After almost singlehandedly rejuvenating interest in the traditional yiros within Brisbane, the team behind The Yiros Shop are firmly establishing their claim as yiros masters with a new expansion to South Bank.
There are plenty of good things to be said about the humble kebab, but its days might be numbered with the advent of the age of gyros. The Greek-style wrap has become a hugely popular item thanks to Nick James, a young restaurateur who made his first foray into gyros distribution through The Yiros Shop on James Street. The simple combination of fluffy pita bread stuffed to bursting point with chicken, pork or lamb, salad, tzatziki and chips proved to be incredibly popular, allowing Nick the opportunity to open a second location in Canon Hill in 2015. March 2016 sees a new South Bank spot open to the public – situated in a 77sqm Grey Street location with plenty of seating and a menu of traditional Greek gyros and other specialties.
In addition to the regular selection of gyros, The Yiros Shop also serves a range of Greek dishes on large and small plates, desserts and sides. Tuck into a selection of Greek dips such as melitzanosalata (roasted eggplant), tirokafteri (spiced feta and capsicum) and taramasalata (salted and cured roe), with a side of calamari, haloumi or fetta chips. If you have room for dessert, be sure to try the rice pudding, galaktoboureko (semolina custard in filo pastry) or the newest addition to the menu – loukoumades, the traditional Greek honey puffs. Breakfast options will be launched in the near future, with Mediterranean eggs, breakfast gyros and avocado on toast soon to be available. Greek beers such as FIX and Mythos are available, as is a range of wine by the glass, coffee and tea. For more information head to the Stumble Guide.
