The Twig & Berry cocktail bar opens in Newstead

Embedded smack-bang in the middle of Newstead’s famed craft-beer crawl, The Twig & Berry is offering creative cocktails in a laidback setting.

Buried in a basement off Commercial Road, new cocktail cave The Twig & Berry knows how to twist a killer potion without the side of pretentiousness. Bright-red gates lead the way, ushering guests through an open-air courtyard and into a dimly lit hollow, where an ambient fit-out and quality drinks await. The former office space has been gutted and given a hefty dose of quirk – salvaged wooden doors line the roof, while wallpaper and original 1970s union posters line the walls, and a selection of seating from plush armchairs to bean bags spoil drinkers for choice.

Just as well you’re comfortable, because the bar’s drink offerings are likely to hold you hostage for far longer than intended. Take your pick from the range of 20 craft beers and ciders on offer, the 20 international and Australian wines available – or make a bartender happy and order an original cocktail. State your cravings and invite the experienced staff to shake up something special, or take your pick from the list of 10 house creations to suit all tastes. Four homemade bottled cocktails including an original twist on the pickle back, an espresso martini made on local cold-drip coffee, a spiced-rum-and-absinthe Zombie and a Russian spring punch round out the offerings.

The sun-drenched courtyard is ideal for a lazy Sunday session, with group serves of sangria, an apricot brandy-based punch and a house version of the bloody Mary incorporating black truffle oil and a bacon strip stirrer – plus the option to trade vodka for bacon fat-washed bourbon. Line the belly with grazing platters of cheese, dips, pickled peppers and mixed spiced nuts.
