The past few months have seen a number of fine-dining institutions close and informal venues stepping in to fill the void, and last week the trend continued with Bar Barossa evolving into The Studio Pop Up Wine Bar & Cellar Door. The restaurant and bar has experienced several changes in ownership during its four years, but now the space is back in the hands of original co-founder Darren Davis, who has pared back the offerings and interior to create a no-fuss watering hole.

Drop in for a free cellar-door-style tasting of the weekly wine selection, which currently boasts contemporary classics such as Artigiano pinot grigio and Aramis Vineyards shiraz, and wild cards like Soul Sister Grenaché Rosé. If you like what you’ve sipped, settle in for a glass or bottle in-store, or grab a bottle or case to go – wines are priced the same, no matter where you choose to indulge. Boutique wines have been sourced from all over the country, and also the globe – from Spain, Italy, France and the US, to the Barossa and McLaren Vale right here at home. Sip and slosh your way through a range of unusual and rare drops, some of which have never been available in Brisbane bars before, or choose from the modest selection of beers and spirits.

The food offerings have also been simplified, now focusing on a few cheese and charcuterie plates featuring pates and terrines from Stella May Fine Foods. Darren will continue to offer his famous long lunches; keep watch on the bar’s Facebook page for upcoming event details. The Studio will operate as a pop up until June when the building lease comes under review, so patrons will have to stay tuned to discover what becomes of the space after that.
