TWE The Melting Pot, Newmarket

The Melting Pot opens in Newmarket

Denizens local to the northside may remember the green, white and red flags of the old Italian Club that fluttered in a quiet Newmarket side street, beckoning curious passersby inside. Now the building on Foster Street has had a facelift, adding some new levels and a few balconies, and has transformed into a multicultural hub housing restaurant-with-heart The Melting Pot.

The deceivingly large building plays home to the Multicultural Community Centre, the International City Church, an education and training school and a function space. But it is The Melting Pot restaurant that caught our eye and hooked our tastebuds this week.

Malaysian, Singaporean and Indian recipes mingle on the menu, with the owners planning to expand the flavour offerings so diners can dip their toes in a melting pot of authentic culture – and people of all cultural backgrounds can come together over a sumptuous meal. Even more heartwarming than a hearty bowl of wonton noodle soup is the fact that The Melting Pot donates any profits generated to a range of charities, with proceeds currently supporting two orphanages in India. Sample a steaming bowl of Melaka laksa, a plate of char kuay teow (stir-fried flat rice ho-fun noodles) or a hearty serving of fish curry with rice. Dine in to lap up the pan-asian flavours or opt to takeaway.
