The Grocer: Zucchini Flowers

To some, zucchini might just be the overrated winter cousin of the cucumber but, in truth, zucchinis have a lot more to offer. It’s the sunny flowers of this vegetable that are a surprisingly popular ingredient for chefs around the world, with the decadent piece able to be fried, stuffed and grilled.

The flower is a golden blossom that sprouts from the end of a new zucchini. Those that are edible should be fresh and only slightly open and can be eaten with or without the stems (depending on your preference). They are most popularly served as a colourful garnish to a salad or, to be a little more impressive, cooked tempura-style after being dipping them in a light batter.

However you choose to cook yours, be mindful that it is still essentially a delicate flower and any cooking time should be kept to a minimum. You can often find zucchini flowers at James St Market or the local farmers markets. You can even add some zucchini blossoms to your baked eggs in the morning.
