Wakame is a unique ingredient that is a great way to get our of your culinary comfort zone. Experimentation comes with big rewards as wakame also comes with a few health benefits.

Aside from your typical sushi roll, many people would have never tried seaweed. It might come as some surprise to know that edible seaweed is one of the most popular meal additions on the planet, used frequently in soups and salads. Before mental images of washed-up piles of squelchy, tangled piles make you recoil, you should know that this seaweed in particular is grown by sea-farmers and packs a range of healthy properties such as magnesium, iodine, calcium and a multitude of vitamins.

The easiest way to incorporate wakame in the kitchen is in a soup or a salad and thankfully there is a large range of fun recipes to try. For something hearty, try a chicken and wakame soup with buckwheat noodles or tofu and wakame miso soup. Other dishes that are great with wakame include soba noodles with wakame, crusted tofu with wakame and lime and sea scallops with sesame and wakame. For an interesting accompaniment, try whipping up some wakame pesto.
