TWE Pomelo

The Grocer: Pomelo

The ruler of the citrus kingdom, at least in terms of its volume, the pomelo is a gargantuan fruit with a pointed stem.

Sometimes, good things come in really big packages – and when it comes to the pomelo, the bigger the better. This luminous yellow globe is best known for its substantial weight, its grapefruit-like flavour, its pink and yellow flesh, and its affinity for sunlight.

Known to many as a Chinese grapefruit or a pumello, this bulky bounty contains high levels of vitamin C and is native to Southeast Asia and the islands of the South Pacific. Thanks to Queensland’s warmer temperatures, pomelos are commonly grown around these parts too – including on the grounds of Turner’s Garden Centre in Rochedale. Pomelos are an essential part of the Chinese Mooncake Festival each year and are harvested between April and August in Southeast Queensland.

You can use every part of the pomelo – including its rind – and it can add a little zest to your salad, slaw, tart, and soup recipes. If in doubt, use pomelo in recipes as you might use a grapefruit. You can buy pomelos at farmers markets and grocers all over Brisbane – just be prepared to carry them home.
