Peppadews

The Grocer: Peppadews

Found in the Limpopo province of South Africa, these sweet little peppers make a perfect spring picnic basket accoutrement.

Peppadews are a trademarked brand of bottled sweet piquante peppers that are generally red or yellow in colour and delicious by nature. The name Peppadew has now come to be used as the common label for these peppers, although they are sometimes listed as red cherry peppers in recipes.

Mild in flavour, these round delights have a hollow centre, making them ideal for stuffing. Slightly crunchy on the outside, Peppadews are best accompanied by a filling of soft cheese. By pairing cream cheese – or an alternative cheese of choice – with your preferred herb or some mild capers, and piping your mixture into the pepper’s centre, you can create a delicious starter or grazing dish.

While feasting on Peppadews, you’ll also be reaping the additional benefits of the high vitamin C content – although, they’re best considered a tasty snack, rather than a member of the super-food committee.

To best utilise a supply of Peppadews, you can make Peppadew poppers, create a simple goats cheese stuffing, or perhaps sample a Peppadew, peach and feta salad. If you’re feeling particularly motivated, you can also learn to bottle sweet piquante peppers and keep a constant supply at the ready.
