The Grocer: Himalayan Pink Salt
While its rosy hue is enough of a reason to buy it straight off the shelf, Himalayan pink salt offers a lot more than colour to its customers. Sourced from a renowned mine in Pakistan, the salt is considered to be much higher in minerals and benefits than your average table accompaniment.
The Khewra salt mines are the home of this pink creation. Located 300 km from The Himalayas, the mine is actually the second-largest salt-cultivating site in the world. At its most natural, the salt forms in a rainbow of pinkish shades as a result of it containing iron oxide – these can range from a rich burgundy to a pale whisper of a hue.
What makes Himalayan pink salt so special is that it is thought to be the purest form of salt available, as it is derived from ancient sea salt deposits. It also contains an impressively rich mineral content (more than 84 types to be precise), with a hint of calcium, potassium, copper and iron as well. It’s these properties that make the salt a wonderful addition to your plate, as well as your body-care regime. When bought as a salt block, the pink salt can also be used as serving ware or a cooking device, resembling a smooth slab of marble.
