The Grocer: Baobab

The Grocer: Baobab

Superfruits don’t get much more exotic than the baobab. Native to mainland Africa, Madagascar and parts of the Arabian Peninsula, the baobab tree offers up one of the most intriguing fruits on the planet, which is edible and healthy.

Those that have seen a baobab tree in person will have made note of the striking and impressive shape, but may have been unaware of the nutritious bounty that it harbours in its branches. Looking very similar to a small coconut, a thick shell conceals the pulp within, looking almost as strange as the tree it grows from. The fruit of a baobab tree is a highly sought after source of nutrients, one that is being hailed as a superfood. The baobab fruit naturally dehydrates in the shell, which is edible from the outset. The fruit boasts six times the amount of antioxidants of blueberries, more vitamin C than oranges and more potassium than bananas. The fruit also provides a hefty amount of calcium, iron and fibre per serving than most other fruits on the market.

It is a hard task finding fresh baobab in Australia, but baobab fruit is pulped and turned into powder, which is readily available from organic goods stores around Brisbane and online from specialist distributors such as Baobab Smile and Halka B. Organics. Health food cafes such as Thr1ve in the City have baobab powder for smoothies as well as in Pressed Juices. If you can get your hands on some baobab powder you can mix it with other ingredients in a range of delicious recipes. Try making some instant baobab frozen yoghurt, baobab smoothies, chia pudding, mince pies and even sangria.
